Lenten Study Series: Thatís Not In the Bible
The period from roughly two hundred years before Christ to around the year 300 of the Common Era (A.D.) saw a great many writings produced by Jewish and Christian writers on a wide variety of topics. Most of these are not included in the Bible we know.
In this series will look at how we got the Bible we have and at some of the writings that did not make the cut. We will, for example, look at the Apocrypha, a collection of books that Roman Catholics regard as Scripture but Protestants generally do not. We will also look at the Books of Enoch, some of which were very popular among early Christians but did not become part of the Christian Bible. (The writers of Enoch had some dire things to say about the fate of the rich.) For good measure, we will also look at the story of Joseph and Aseneth, a tale of passion and intrigue which embellishes the Genesis story of Joseph. These materials will help us gain some insight into the spiritual and imaginative world in which our faith was formed. Then there are all those Gospels other than Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.......
Six weeks: Monday, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and April 6 in the church parlour, at 7:00 pm Sessions approximately one hour in length. All are welcome.
